We are delighted to see our 2024 Quartz Reef Pinot Gris reviewed by respected wine writer Mark Henderson in the Wine Times column of the Otago Daily Times.
Describing the wine as "complex, fascinating, a more serious style that will beautifully complement food," Henderson highlights the distinctive character of this Central Otago Pinot Gris. His review notes a deeper register on the nose, with fruit pastille aromas supported by subtle savoury qualities, creating a wine that is elegant and composed rather than overtly fruit-driven.
On the palate, Henderson praises the wine's grip and structure, pointing to spice and savoury characters alongside delicate fruit-pith phenolics that contribute to its textural appeal. He also notes the wine's long, dry finish and a cooling mineral influence reminiscent of seashells and water flowing over river stones.
For us at Quartz Reef, this review beautifully captures the style of Pinot Gris we strive to produce from our biodynamically farmed Bendigo vineyards in Central Otago. Rather than focusing solely on fruit expression, our aim is to craft wines with texture, balance, complexity and a genuine sense of place.
The 2024 Quartz Reef Pinot Gris is an excellent food wine, pairing effortlessly with seafood, poultry, seasonal vegetables and dishes that benefit from a wine with both freshness and structure.
We thank Mark Henderson and the Otago Daily Times Wine Times team for their thoughtful review and recognition of this special vintage.
