If Marlborough is the engine room of New Zealand wine, then Central Otago must surely be the poster girl. The two regions couldn’t be more different. Marlborough has a maritime climate and stony sandy loam soils over deep, stony river gravels. Central Otago boasts New Zealand’s only continental climate with moderately old windblown loess soils interspersed with river gravels and sandy soils.
Marlborough is best known for its distinctively punchy sauvignon blanc and we’ve included a great example form the Awatere Valley. As a reminder that the region is not a one trick pony we’ve included a pinot gris, chardonnay and pinot noir from the country’s largest region.
Pinot noir rules in Central Otago and we will taste three great examples together with the first release of a Quartz Reef grüner veltliner that we particularly admire.
This is not so much a battle between two great wine regions as an opportunity to talk about eight great wines that deserve to be noticed.
Bob Campbell MW will taste through these wines, looking at what to eat with them, as well as sharing stories and insights about the wineries and wines.
