This October 2019, Quartz Reef is turning 21. A wonderful milestone for us and also the region as our Quartz Reef vineyard was the first planted at Bendigo Station in 1998. Today, this beautiful wine growing region represents 25% of Central Otago’s volume and is continuing to grow. To celebrate the occasion, we have created a very special commemorative twinpack containing a bottle of Methode Traditionnelle Vintage 2010 and Otto Pinot Noir 2017. The Vintage 2010 has been kept safely in Rudi’s library for this very occasion and Otto 2017 represents our most current vintage release from our Royal block. Our journey of discovery and learning has revealed a ‘magical sweet spot’ within the vineyard. Found on the most eastern block 12 of the vineyard, the first to greet the sun and revered as the ‘Royal Block’ is uniquely close planted at 8,000 vines per hectare on glacial derived soils. The fruit for “Otto” Pinot Noir 2017 has been chosen from this distinctive site and included here to best reflect the first chapter of our Bendigo, Central Otago history.
As our hand-crafted Méthode Traditionnelle comes of age, we have chosen our Vintage 2010 as the perfect partner to “Otto”. An engaging vintage highlighting the adaptability of the Chardonnay grape to embrace the beauty of its surroundings. This small parcel of Vintage 2010 was retired to our library for extended maturation on lees as it expressed the ability to shine with ageing.
We share these wines now in celebration of this very special milestone – a coming of age for our region and a beautiful representation of the first 21 years of commitment, passion and discovery.
