Wine Reviews

Pinot Noir 2016: Awarded 94 Points

"Expressive, fruit driven, perfume of dried rose and dried flowers, red fruits. Medium bodied, juicy softness, fine grained tannin, sweet herbal mouth-perfume, finesse and length. Quiet authority and a kiss of vanilla and rose on the finish. A bit of the old ‘mineral’ here too. Lovely stuff."

Pinot Gris 2017: Awarded 92 Points

Fine, varietal, aromatic, pear and lemon drops. Flows along on the palate with a subtle mix of herb, bitter, sweet and pear flavour. Tickle of spritz. White fleshed fruit with a quinine lick in the aftertaste. Dry style. Nicely done.

Franz Ferdinand Pinot Noir 2015: Awarded 95 Points

Awarded 95 Points

Very beautiful perfume, fragrant with floral rose characters, red cherry, faint brown spices, touch of cedar. Deeply flavoured, succulent palate with ripe cherry, pomegranate juice and a lick of amaro. The finish builds into a light pucker. It’s effortless and very beautiful.

Bendigo Estate Single Ferment Pinot Noir 2016: Awarded 91 Points

Quartz Reef Bendigo Estate Single Ferment Pinot Noir 2016

Awarded 91 Points

Pretty perfume of red cherry, strawberry, rose petals. Juicy and bright to taste, quite sweet and ripe in flavour, soft and well balanced feel in palate though, nice chew of tannins, gentle again. Good drinking here. Feels simple and pleasing.

Methode Traditionnelle Rose NV: Awarded 92 Points

Pink, pretty sparkling, scents of sweet strawberry, musk sticks. Creamy, simple flavours, strawberry and sour cherries. Tart finish. Nice frisky bubbles. Relatively simple style though texture is good, quiet power appealing and sense of ‘mineral’ and savoury fruit character is great. Good drink.

Vintage 2013 Blanc de Blancs: Awarded 95 Points

Rudi Bauer (Quartz Reef) is near peerless in sparkling winemaking in New Zealand, with few seeming to be super-specialists of the genre. Alongside his prowess with fizz, he is of course a pioneer of Central Otago. He also could do a good job of being a Bond baddie, but he’s just too funny and nice – the Austrian accent, unnerving precision and erect stance are deceiving…

Incredibly fine, intense and vivacious sparkling wine. Shows pedigree from the get go, bright scents of pear, apple, sweet spice, fresh bread, but it?s the palate that holds the power, a brisk yet deeply flavoured rush of fruit, spice, bready, savoury notes and ultra fine, frisky bead. Superb drinking. Class.

Vintage 2013: Awarded 97 Points and 5 Stars

Vintage 2013 - Blanc de Blancs

Delicious Methode made from 100% chardonnay and with plenty of biscuit and brioche yeast lees flavour indicating plenty of time en tirage. This really is a terrific wine - quite robust and flavoursome for a Blanc de Blancs, with a lengthy finish and a moderately silken texture. A sophisticated wine with its own distinctive character.
