The Fine Wines of New Zealand for 2016

Quartz Reef Methode Traditionnelle Vintage 2010

Wine experts have settled on a list of close to 50 wines, some costing more than $100 a bottle, for Air New Zealand to select from for its business class passengers.

Six of the nation's leading independent wine experts have selected "The Fine Wines of New Zealand" - to serve in planes from September.

A selection panel comprising Masters of Wine Alastair Maling, Michael Brajkovich, Sam Harrop, Simon Nash and Steve Smith along with Master Sommelier Cameron Douglas has agreed on the list for 2016 which includes 47 wines representing seven varietals.

One of the key criteria was consistency, with a wine having had to have been produced to an ''exceptional standard'' for a minimum of five consecutive years.

Organic wines, once a small market niche, now offer plenty of quality choices.

Our "clean, green" image promotes New Zealand wine overseas, but only 6% of the country's vineyard area is certified organic.  The good news is that interest in organic wine production is snowballing.  You can choose from a wide selection of organically certified wines, from dozens of committed producers.  Organic Winegrowers New Zealand says its members "strive to co-operate with nature"; no synthetic chemical fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides are allowed.

Do the wines taste better?  A recent trial - involving Mission in Hawke's Bay, Wither Hills in Marlborough and Gibbston Valley in Central Otago - found no major chemical differences between each winery's organic and conventional wines and reached no consensus about which tasted better.

The wines reviewed here are all BioGro-certified:

QUARTZ REEF PINOT NOIR 2014

XXXXX

This bold, generous red was estate-grown in Central Otago.

Deeply coloured, mouth-filling, rich and softly textural, it is a powerful but elegant wine, offering deep plum/spice flavours, complex and savoury.

Likely to be long-lived, it's already delicious.

Quartz Reef Pinot Noir 2015

XXXX

90 / 100

Medium-bodied pinot noir, with ripe dark cherry and berry flavours together with charry oak and a suggestion of fresh herb characters. Fine tannins give the wine a suede-like texture. A little closed now but with potential.
