Wine Reviews

Methode Traditionnelle Rose

90

The NV Methode Traditionelle Rose (LR2011) has a very pale salmon-pink color and delicate nose of strawberries and cream, brioche and marzipan with a hint of roses. The palate is very fine and elegantly fruited with lively red berries and a gentle creaminess, finishing with great length.

Methode Traditionnelle Vintage 2010

91+

The 2010 Methode Traditionelle is a beautiful example of a top quality methode Champenoise that actually delivers on elegance, finesse and intensity on a quality par with that other famous region for sparklers. Scented of fresh apples, brioche, white peaches and toasted almonds, it fills the palate with creamy stone fruit and mineral flavors, supported by plenty of freshness and fine, frisky bubbles, finishing with great length. Still very youthful, I wouldn't be surprised if this scores a bit higher in 2-6 years.

Pinot Gris 2014

90

With notes of ripe pears, honey drizzled peaches and apple pie plus a waft of jasmine, the 2014 Pinot Gris from Quartz Reef is one of New Zealand’s best examples of this variety. Medium-bodied with a satiny texture, the palate contributes baking spice flavors and plenty of freshness. It should develop gracefully over 3-5 years.

Pinot Noir 2013

90+

Pale to medium ruby colored, the 2013 Pinot Noir has a pronounced nose of black cherries, black raspberries and mulberries with hints of red roses, anise and cloves. Medium-bodied, the palate comes though as more savory and multi-layered that the nose suggests with plenty of earthy flavors supported by a light graininess from the tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing with great length.

Bendigo Estate Pinot Noir 2013

91+

Pale to medium ruby-purple colored, the 2013 Bendigo Estate Single Ferment Pinot Noir gives relatively delicate cranberry, red currant and forest floor notes with hints of dried herbs, lavender and dusty earth. Medium-bodied with vivacious red berry flavors supported by fine grained tannins and oodles of freshness, it finishes with an earthy / herbal lift.

Pinot Noir 2013

"Die Welt" - German online Magazine

“The best Pinot Noirs from New Zealand”

Translation:

“With a share of about eight percent of total production the Pinot Noir could be described as the crown prince of the New Zealand wine industry. Apart from Sauvignon Blanc no variety enjoys a higher importance. The Australian wine critic James Halliday described the New Zealand red wine even as the only worthy challenger for Burgundy.  Of course we had to test this assertion and we have found five Pinot Noirs which do not need to fear the international comparison.”

One of them is the… QUARTZ REEF PINOT NOIR 2013

"The Austrian winemaker Rudi Bauer has everything under control on the grounds of Quartz Reef. With twenty years of experience in the production of premium wines he is one of the regional pioneers and is now planning his latest project: The conversion of his vineyard to biodynamic production.”
