A strong serving of toasty and spicy oak, across ripe black-cherry aromas. The palate has plush, deep-set richness and ripeness; flavors of mocha-laced black cherries abound. A bold, assertive style that’s utterly delicious.

Very beautiful perfume, fragrant with floral rose characters, red cherry, faint brown spices, touch of cedar. Deeply flavoured, succulent palate with ripe cherry, pomegranate juice and a lick of amaro. The finish builds into a light pucker. It’s effortless and very beautiful.

Pretty perfume of red cherry, strawberry, rose petals. Juicy and bright to taste, quite sweet and ripe in flavour, soft and well balanced feel in palate though, nice chew of tannins, gentle again. Good drinking here. Feels simple and pleasing.

Quartz Reef Bendigo Estate Single Ferment Pinot Noir 2016
Awarded 5 stars
"Certified organic and biodynamic, the rare 2016 vintage (5*) is from "a single ferment? personally selected by Rudi Bauer as it best expresses the Bendigo Estate vineyard." Barrel-aged for 15 months and bottled unfined and unfiltered, it is a powerful, highly fragrant red, mouthfilling, ripe and very savoury, with concentrated, sweet-fruit flavours, hints of herbs, nuts and liquorice, gentle acidity and notable complexity. Already delicious, it's well worth cellaring to 2020+."

"Made from a selection of grapes from the easterly section of Quartz Reef s hillside Bendigo vineyard. Silken-textured pinot noir in a rather restrained and elegant style that seems to be more accessible and suppler than the Bendigo Estate label. A seductive wine."

"Made from a special selection of organic/biodynamically farmed grapes from the centre of their hillside Bendigo vineyard. A very classy wine with impressive density and a complex array of flavours that include dark cherry and berry, liquorice, wood smoke and Oriental spices. BENDIGO ESTATE PINOT NOIR 2015

19.5 / 20
Even ruby-red colour with slight garnet hues, a little paler on the edge. This has a powerfully concentrated and bold nose with aromas of ripe black cherry and berry fruits along with subtle notes of dark herbs and black mineral elements, unfolding violet and black-red florals. This has considerable depth, concentration ad intensity. Medium-full bodied, the palate has rich and vibrant, mouthfilling flavours of ripe black berries and blackberry fruit entwined with dark herbs and complexing whole bunch stalk notes, and mineral nuances. The fruit is deeply packed, but exudes sweetness and richness, filling the palate with breadth. The fruit sweetness is balanced by plenty of fine-grained tannins and structure, with integrated acidity. The wine has real drive, leading to a long and sustained finish blossoming in flavour and richness. This is a very powerfully concentrated and richly mouthfilling, black-fruited Pinot Noir with plenty of structure and balancing grip. Match with casseroles, slow-cooked game meat dishes and semi-hard cheeses over the next 10 years. A single ferment, named ‘Titi’, selected to best express the ‘Bendigo Estate’ vineyard. Hand-picked 115 clone fruit, from the mid-section of the vineyard, vines 16 y.o., indigenous yeast fermented with 20% whole bunches to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 15 months in 16% new oak. Certified Demeter biodynamic. 125 dozen made.

NZ Organic Wine Awards Wine of the Show: Quartz Reef Bendigo Estate Pinot Noir 2014
The 2017 “Wine of the Show” is the Quartz Reef Bendigo Estate Pinot Noir. Despite the competition being incredibly tight our judges agreed that the Bendigo Pinot Noir was something special. Rudi Bauer has crafted a bold, powerful, yet intricately clever wine that stood out amongst this years impressive line up on Pinot Noir’s. Well worthy of wine of the show in 2014, although we can’t wait to see how this cellars over the next 6-10 years.

John Saker: Winemakers try something new, throwing out the Roseworthy Rules
It wasn't long ago that a winemaker deemed to be "experimental" was one who planted a new grape variety. If the variety's name was suitably evocative (eg Albarino), the producer wasn't just experimental, but a rebellious pathfinder.
It's always interesting to see how a new variety adapts to life in Aotearoa. However, that's no longer the cool laboratory. The best experiments today are all about method, in the vineyard and winery, no matter what variety you're dealing with.
"This is one of winemaker Rudi Bauer's best yet. A recent conversion to biodynamics has led greater harmony, and this wine is a dark, settled, lithe pinot that speaks of Bendigo, its place of origin."

Pinot excellent value for discerning drinkers
"Clearly powerful nose with a hint of menthol. This is a big, dense, burly beast of a wine, somewhat monolithic now and built for the long haul, with its density of fruit and powerful tannins, seasoned with an appealing savouriness and wild herbs: oak nuances and a little heat on the close.
An assault on the senses for now; give this some time."

No 1 - Quartz top drop
2013 Quartz Reef Bendigo Estate Pinot Noir
Rudi Bauer has made Bendigo Estate Pinot Noir every year since 2001 from a selection of the top grapes from Bendigo, chosen by Bauer and his winemaking team.
Bendigo is one of the sunniest of Central Otago's grape growing areas, which means that it often ripens grapes earliest and they can contain relatively big tannins - a plus for Pinot.
This wine is full of pluses - it's full bodied with pronounced red fruit flavours of cherries and ripe plums, which are nicely integrated with subtle aromas of cloves, nutmeg and earth.
It drinks beautifully right now and has the ability to evolve positively in the bottle for up to a decade.

This wine is chosen from the vineyard not by barrel selection and it's not always same block. It is a small production, only 1200 bottles. Bauer poured it specifically to show me a different picture of this vineyard. It is a very expressive wine with ruby into purple-ish berries alongside chocolate and cedar with tea leaf. Amazing structure and brightness with quite firm but fine tannins.

Elegant, fruity, complex and inviting bouquet with a gentle soft herb note and moderate+ oak. Central Otago: Where Nature & Pinot Noir Reign
New Zealand was put on the wine map with their Sauvignon Blanc that exhibits its signature grapefruity aromas and tastes . But there are more wines in that beautiful country which beg notice and a healthy pour. Recently, representatives from New Zealand Complexity, a portfolio of “most impressive wines to showcase some the best what New Zealand can offer the USA” with its “hero wines and winemakers”, arrived in Chicago. The Masterclass tasting was held at Rebar, the uber-hip lounge at the Trump Hotel. Fortunately, Rebar’s sweeping views of the Chicago River and skyline didn’t distract me from tasting fifteen incredible wines which included Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Merlot blends, and Pinot Noir.
The Quartz Reef Bendigo Estate Pinot Noir 2001 looked and tasted a bit like sherry. Rich and somewhat sweet with acidity, plenty of fruit (raisins?), this wine was incredible.
Apparently, I’m not the only one who has more than a passing interest in this wine region. In April 2014, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited Central Otago. Local wineries were selected to share their best wines with a focus on Pinot Noir at a private event held at host winery Amisfeld. Felton Road, Mt. Difficulty, and Quartz Reef were among those included and I would love to know what the royals thought about Central Otago Pinot Noirs!
With fewer than 18,000 residents and an area of 10,000km, nature and Pinot Noir reign in Central Otago. Snow capped mountains, rivers which glisten, ancient rocks, and tussock are the backdrop for breathtaking views. There is the clear, bright light of sunshine during the day and a star studded sky at night. Leaving the stress of daily life behind I can see myself appreciating these vistas in Central Otago with a glass of Pinot Noir in my hand. I’m ready. Won’t you join me?

Quartz Reef Bendigo Estate Pinot Noir 2011

An emerging star of Central Otago. Designed for cellaring, it is estate-grown on a steep, north-facing, ‘seriously warm’ site at the north-east end of Lake Dunstan, at Bendigo Station. The 2010 vintage is a dark, authoritative wine, combining power with approachability. Likely to flourish for a decade, it is very savoury and nutty, with layers of very ripe plum, cherry and spice flavours, fine-grained tannins and a rich, rounded finish.
The 2011 is 'the single ferment that best expresses' the site. Deep and youthful in colour, it was matured for 11 months in French oak casks (16 per cent new). A beautifully flowing red with dense cherry, plum, spice and nut flavours, it is very full-bodied (14.5 per cent alcohol), but not tough, with buried tannins. A classic, thought-provoking, 'brooding' style, it's still a baby

My favourite Bendigo producer has really delivered a very classy wine this vintage.
Made from hand-picked grapes grown on a 15-hectare hillside vineyard.
The wine is a single ferment (that is, not a blend of several ferments). It is matured in predominantly one-year-old French barriques and is intense, subtly smooth and succulent without the flatness that dogs some other wines from this promising district.
Linear, focused pinot noir that is beautifully structured and shows terrific aging potential.
